This was not our first visit and I have to say it was the best meal yet. Came with friends on Thursday lunchtime and had a wonderful dining experience. Every course fresh, beautifully presented and tasted divine. Nothing too much trouble. The Plough seems to have adjusted the portion sizes since our last visit and it represents great value for money. The new addition of the box of chocolates at the end of the meal was a lovely surprise. We are lucky to have such a nice fine dining restaurant so close by.

Three of the four of us had roast beef, one had roast chicken. The roast beef was cooked to our liking in each case, and was absolutely delicious. The roast potatoes were among the best we’ve ever eaten outside our own homes. Tasty gravy. Yorkshire puddings a little burnt but still mainly edible. Could have done with more veg!
Pear pud and chocolate pud nice enough.
Service was pretty good after the first hitch of our sitting at our table waiting to be given a menu (lunch had been booked in advance)….
Pretty expensive overall for what it was; there is a fair bit of competition in the larger area in which we choose to eat out.

My husband and I had reviewed the menu prior and were both excited to try
the rabbit starter. Although we had an early evening table after being given the menus we were told "Oh by the way if your looking at the rabbit we've run out". The other starters were not really to our liking and nothing was offered to replace the unavailable starter. Appreciate that menus can be subject to change but very early to run out of what was the only meat starter. Having perused the wine list offered we chose one of our favourites but on ordering were told "Oh we don't do that one anymore" So why was it still on the wine list and not struck out or marked unavailable? Overall we enjoyed the food although for a Michelin* experience we have had better for the same or less cost. We would visit Bowleys again as love the rural country pub experience but would again review the menu and call them to pre-order any favourite choices.

We dined at Bowley's with 2 of our friends who live in Trottiscliffe. The 2 of us live in Crawley. The food was excellent. The service was very good apart from one member of the serving staff. We do not know his name.....a tall guy. He was very stern and unsmiling and argued with one member of our party about the starter that he had ordered. The amuse bouche was a nice touch, however we were not told what was on the platter when it was served to us. It transpired that the balls were meat. We do not eat meat or poultry so our friends ate the 4 meatballs. When the platter was taken away our friend asked what the dip and the other item was. They turned out to be smoked butter and aioli. We had been asked if any of us had any allergies - but as we did not know that we would be getting an amuse bouche we had not thought to say at that point that 2 of us did not eat meat or poultry.

We have been to Bowleys a few times, and absolutely loved it the first time - we were so glad to have such a great restaurant nearby - the food was amazing - so tasty and also creative - and it was so warm and friendly. However sadly each time since it has deteriorated. The wine was very obviously corked and the glasses looked dirty. The waiter didn’t seem to know anything. The partridge was very dry and overcooked and the gurnard was too (although the sauce was tasty). The other main courses on the a la carte were very nice, but small. The apple dessert was just creamy - no taste of apple at all - so disappointing. The yuzu desert was also just cream - weak in citrus taste and totally overpowered by the very strong basil sorbet. The artichoke starter was good but not knock-out; same with the mushroom starter. Yes 2 of us had the set menu, but even so, the portions were ridiculously small. Don’t get me wrong, the food is still overall good, and I hate to not support local businesses, but paying £250 for 4 (just one drink each) in a cost of living crisis - the food has to be pretty perfect to warrant it. We were disappointed by the experience and sadly won’t be back for a while.

The starter was delicious and just like the Instagram image. The chicken main was not well balanced and everything on the plate was very rich including the extra cauliflower side. My husband had the chocolate desert which was devine. Overall very good but still a way to go.

The starters and puddings were excellent. Unfortunately, the three servings of halibut were rather dry (?overcooked), as were the potatoes, and the ravioli containing the bisque was very doughy. My venison was perfect.

Externally it’s unprepossessing and the car park is quite small, but once inside you are warmly welcomed and treated as an honoured guest.
We chose the set lunch menu and before our meal Alex treated us to some amuse bouches which comprised a filo pastry cone filled with crab and and a cheese savoury followed by two very different breads and home made butters and an alioli like spread - scrumptious! It’s such a pleasure when the people who have prepared and cooked your food are keen to present it and engage with you.
My wife chose the smoked halibut to start and duck breast to follow and I had the vegetable spiral and the roasted brill, all of which were impeccably presented and mouth-wateringly delicious.
We were almost ready to leave, when Alex came out again and presented us with his ‘toy box’, an imaginatively made stained wooden box with a variety of different access points which housed a mixture of white and dark chocolate and strawberry treats.
A friend recommended Bowleys at the Plough and said it was very good. That was an understatement. I’ve yet to visit a better restaurant in Kent and some of London’s best could learn from Alex and the Yates family on how to delight their customers.
It was our first visit and we’ll definitely be going back.

This was my first visit to Bowleys, although my son and daughter-in-law have been several times, so its reputation had preceded it. Really lovely experience, with food and service excellent and to the highest quality, in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Attention to detail was super. Thank you, we will return.

Lovely greeting as we entered the premises. Very comfortable and cozy interior, toilets impeccably clean. The Sunday lunch was delicious and the service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely be visiting again to try the tasting menu.

It was very welcoming on arrival. We were given a very comfortable table. We chose the set lunch menu and the range of choices was perfect. The food was delicious and the beer and choice of wine was good. We were not hurried and could have stayed for as long as we liked. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch was had by all. Can’t think of any improvements …keep up the good work.

Hi, my friends and I all really enjoyed our lunch at Bowleys. The food was indeed both intriguing and delicious.
We were a little disappointed with the service, the waiter seemed less than interested, very little interaction and was not really able to answer queries about the menu. Despite this we had a very enjoyable time, we were pleased to meet the chef and he and the second waiter were much more sociable and welcoming. I would go back again and recommend to friends.

Very accommodating, especially when it looked as if we would be having a dog with us - suitable arrangements were put in place but, as it turned out, these proved unnecessary and our party was relocated elsewhere.
The lighting over our table was inadequate, but did not prove a problem. A very pleasant evening and one we look forward to repeating. Thankyou.
