Mijn kinderen zijn langsgekomen, zij vonden het geweldig. Super lekker ook de wijn zeiden ze mij ; ) heel vriendelijk en verzorgd. Wel waren ze unaniem voor één voor-gerechtje met groenten die ze alle vijf kregen viel niet in hun smaak. We komen zeker terug, en dan kom ik zeker ook mee, groetjes, Axelle Martens.

A fine japanese restaurant offering tasteful food. We were 5 (2 adults - 3 children) The service was really nice, the sushi's were truly amazing, nothing compared to those restaurant chains that pretend to be true sushi restaurant. We will come back when we're in town.

Lekker eten en aangename sfeer. Goede uitleg over het eten en voor het eerst iemand die adviseerde om niet alles in de soya te dippen omdat je dan de smaak van het eten niet goed proeft. Helemaal goed dus, absolute aanrader.

Was welcomed at the door by the chef who was warm and friendly. Food was excellent and met expectations. Servers were attentive and informative. The only downside was the air in the restaurant was stuffy. Opening the windows would have easily solved that problem. But overall an almost 10/10 experience and will definitely be going back.

Very good quality of food and tasted very well.
Service was a bit chaotic, we were happy we entered before 19h, because after that it was chaos. I think there was a new girl serving and she did her very best, but I think it was difficult for her due to language barrier.
We really enjoyed the duck, tasted very very good. More sauce would be great to be able to put it over the rice as well :)

Once again we had a very good meal in the Amatsu! You can see the chef at work in the restaurant. The fish @ shellfish he uses are super fresh. In our opinion the best restaurant in Ghent and surroundings! The service this time was a little less than top notch. The (new?) room assistant had a hard time keeping up with the pace of the orders. However, this restaurant is and remains the number one in the region

I was having dinner alone, since I was traveling for work. The food was very nice and the open kitchen gives it an extra dimension. The manager was very friendly and explained about the food and the difference between the Asian and Western kitchen. This was a nice added value.

Het diner was, naar goede gewoonte, echt super lekker, verfijnd, ontzettend vers,... Maar deze keer hebben we héél land moeten wachten om bediend te worden. Hopelijk was dit een eenmalig probleempje door de drukte. De bediening was heel correct en ontzettend vriendelijk.

We had a good evening and enjoyed the sushi which was served. The waiter was extremely friendly and served us well. The sushi itself was great, the quality of the fish was very good. What I do not understand is why this shall be honored with a star from Michelin. Don't get me wrong, the food was great but it was not something super special. All in all I would recommend to go there if you are searching for a nice evening with good sushi.

* really loved being the Sake pairings, very delightful selection. Don't really like the laminated paper though, I think there's an opportunity to give a more inspired clarification when serving the Sake (in person, with enthusiasm rather than reading it yourself)
* Setting was Ok but nothing out of the ordinary. I think for a Japanese restaurant at this price point you could add a more thoughtful interior and ask 20 euros more per person easily
* Dessert was not very nice at all. We got the matcha creme brulee but this wasn't really my taste. I lacked texture, variety and the matcha wasn't balanced at all. (it can get slightly bitter if you use it too intensively)
* I appreciate the pickles and the clarification the waiter gave when serving the appetizer, explaining all the vegetables. Very nice and a very nice selection of produce. Would be interesting to learn even more how they are procured, where they are grown, etc. People come to taste Japan, not "just sushi".
Overall, very happy we went here. I hope the tips or ideas are contributing to the pursuit of excellence.

Wonderful food but given the rest of the experience the meal was overpriced. Nice people, but rather amateur service. Waited over 1/2 hour between first course and main course (which was incomplete). If I went back I would make it clear of my course timing expectations.

Bij het binnenkomen had ik meteen een Japan gevoel waar andere oosterse, Aziatische of sushi restaurants eerder een commerciële uitstraling hebben. Het eten en de bediening waren top. Had ik nog plaats over dan probeerde ik meerdere gerechten uit. Ik had zeker weten het mooie terras gebruikt indien het heel de avond helder weer was. Helaas had het de avond dat ik er was ook geregend.
Kon er iets beter? Goh ik zou de houten wegwerp eetstokjes voor de takeaway houden. Als je ter plaatse blijft dineren, zou ik iets in de zin van Tokyo design studio chopsticks op de gedekte tafel leggen. De kleur van de eetstokjeshouder was enorm aan het afgeven en in de mannen wc hingen een beetje stofnetten aan het plafond.
De kaart met uitleg over de aangepaste sake zou eventueel een fancy touch mogen hebben.
Al bij al dus een zeer goede ervaring omwille van de inrichting, het eten en de bediening. Ik kom zeker nog terug.

Expected a higher quality of food since the restaurant received Michelin ratings multiple times. The rice for the nigiri was not right. Lacked quality/flavour. Miso soup came out luke warm. Sauce for ebifurai tasted like bottled tonkatsu sauce. Surprised that it was not traditional tartar sauce.
Chef was attentive with his guests and made his way through the restaurant speaking to every table and asking how we liked the food. He even took time to explain the differences in the fish and how too much wasabi ruins the fish.
The restaurant itself felt crowded and really warm. Dim room.

A very good japanese restaurant, with an outstanding sake selection.
The sushi's are exceptional, the rice itself in it is delicious, the fishes both subtle and very intense in taste and a cutting translating pure mastery!
The starters : ebi furai, with a perfect panko crust, a natural wakame salad, with grilled sesam, not at all as sweet as the industrial version we are used to in many sushi chain. And a vegan gyoza that was perfect, with a very thin dough. The miso soup was very deep and intense.
Beside the compliments, I have to add some little negative remarks...
The matcha creme brulée was delicious, and very well balanced, but I was expecting a caramel crust to break wich we didn't have, and the quantity was very small as well (a ramequin with a diameter of 10 cm for a depth of 1 cm of the cream).
The overall service was good and quite friendly, but when we asked to the waitress if there was an order for the sushi's, she huffed and said there wasn't. But I looked on google to see there was. Another waitress at another table even explained to people in which order they had to eat the sushi's...
We love going there, and we know this restaurant for many years, this has always been delicious. Unfortunately though, the card didn't change at all in 10 years. This is what would discourage us to come back more often, especially with the number of true Japanese restaurants rising in the city.

I frequently visited Japan in the past and enjoyed much of the food served at Amatsu. In general it gives an idea of what Japanese food is and obviously it better than 99% of sushi bars in but still… . Probably it didn’t help several of the plates arrived rather cold on our table and the waitresses have no clue about the order plates are served in Japan.
