As I commented at the time, but was unable to give you my full reaction, as I was treating a friend. Firstly, she was served sea bass rather than stone bass and from where I was sitting, it was placed on top of an enormous pile of mashed potatoes. Not a green leaf in sight! My dish was very disappointing as it had but half a duck breast with no crispy skin and it was served with some kind of croquettes and on a horrible pile of watery chopped beetroot which bled all over the plate. I had assumed it was roasted, but I think not. It was a reminder of school dinners on a Sunday night when cook was ‘off’. Altogether very disappointing and expensive meal.

A really beautiful setting with delightful staff.
We were seated by the door and with the draught my kids were freezing cold and no blankets were available. The food was very good. I had the Cheese Soufflé for starter which was fabulous topped off with the Suet Pudding which was equally as good. My wife chose the Sirloin which was cooked to perfection although lacking flavour. Overall a great experience topped off with a few pints of ale.

First time back since before the Pandemic. Fabulous as usual - high standards all round maintained. Chris is the perfect host - rushed off his feet but nothing too much trouble. The Steak and Kidney Pudding together with fresh vegetables is unique amongst the places we eat - thanks Natalie. The wine is simply better than we seem to be able to buy - smooth and rich. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is better than we get anywhere - eaten with custard and cream.
Since you ask needs for "improvement" -
1. prices have increased as have many commodities - we still think they justify their prices but caution should be exercised on the cost to customer in relation to inflation and increased alternative costs to family budgets.
2. the Sticky Toffee Pudding - great but I felt the "sponge" part had reduced in size
However the Rose and Thistle remains at the top of the Premiership of places we eat despite my norm of Steak and Chips.

We chose the Rose and Thistle as a fairly random venue when a booking that we made in Salisbury was cancelled by the pub there. We are glad we did! It was a lovely experience. I have always loved the Rose and Thistle, affectionately known as the RAT. I was treated to lunch on Tuesday so suggested we went to the Rose and Thistle. I only wanted a light lunch so ordered the crab bruschetta from the starter menu priced at £10.95. Quite pricey so I was expecting a reasonable portion, however there was just one small bruschetta with about a tablespoon of crab meat on the top - devoured in 2 mouthfuls. Not good value, I was too embarrassed to complain as I was not paying. If the waitress had informed me that there were more lunch options on the back of the menu I could have had a crab sandwich for the same price, far more satisfying!

Our food was excellent and very good value. The downside was that even though it is May temperatures are low. It was cold. Lovely fire there which if lit would have enhanced the whole experience. We have been before in the height of summer but a chilly atmosphere is depressing. Loved the Rarebit.

Two things-The prices are VERY fair for a meal of this quality in a building of such beauty.
We went to a place near Brockenhurst recently, (named after an animal that loves acorns in the Autumn); we enjoyed it, the bill was twice as much and the food half as good. And they only had Flacks in bottles. Thank you.

We were meeting family and needed a venue mid-way. As neither party new any of the New Forest pubs, I chose the Rose and Thistle based only on the quality of its menu. It did not disappoint, everything was fantastic. A delicious three course lunch was had by all. My husband is a chef and objects to paying good money for average food. This was anything but average. Lovely meal and very friendly and efficient staff. Restaurant a bit chilly, not a good idea to have a table in front of the fire blocking the heat coming into the room. Other than that a very enjoyable lunch, thank you.

Really cosy pub with a bar and a restaurant area. Low ceilings, warm fire, decent beer, good friendly service and good food. My personal recommendation is the steak and kidney pudding. You will find many pubs offering a steak and kidney pie, but not many offering a traditional suet pudding or using such good quality steak. Bracket this with a cheese souffle and a crumble and you needn't eat for two days.

What a lovely surprise this restaurant was . A warm and friendly greeting on arrival . Exceptionally charming service throughout . Prompt and smiling . Very good food and a great atmosphere .
