What a lovely restaurant. Wonderful service from friendly and knowledgable staff and a beautiful outdoor courtyard for dining. And the food! So delicious. The mole was smoky and spicy, the chiles rellenos savory, spicy and satisfying. And the oxtail was fork tender in a rich, complex chile-based sauce. Lots of warm, fresh corn tortillas to accompany everything. BYOB...they provide glasses, you bring the booze. We can't wait to go back.

Oxtails very soft but lacking much flavor. My brother does not like ceviche but opined ceviche here was best he had ever had. I am a lover of beans and beans here very good. Sauces are very nice. Bread pudding is like the best malasada on steroids you have ever had.

No Tex-Mex here. Instead, well-prepared Mexican regional specialties are served in a relaxed outdoor courtyard in the heart of Chinatown. This is some of the best Mexican fare I have tasted north pf the border. Don't miss it.

Since this was my first time there, I tried to be a little conservative in my review - compared to other restaurants, Tlaxcalli ranks very high. My "8" rating for "Overall Experience" is based on our arrival: the male who let us in at the 9 am opening was not very welcoming nor helpful at first. It seemed he had other things on his mind as we had to ask him twice to get us a decent table and to clean off the seats and table top as we were about to sit outside. If he had just said "Good morning and welcome" I would have rated the experience higher. Oh well, perhaps I'm old fashioned but businesses may want to think twice on "being nice" - it costs nothing and that is a way to separate yourself from the competition. The waitress, thank goodness, was superb: polite, attentive, concerned about our experience, and prompt. Oh, the food was honest, I could taste the individual ingredients, there were no overwhelming sauces masking the fresh fish poke, wonderful understated beans, perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, and the salsa with the huervos rancheros was divine. Go for the food and the lovely alfresco experience.

The food was good, the outdoor ambiance was great with the string lights. However, they have a very limited drink menu, yet have a full bar - and they don’t let you order any kind of drink that’s not on the limited mixed drink menu. For example, I wanted a tequila soda. They made me order a shot of tequila, brought me a separate tall glass of soda water, and A slice of lime on a plate. It made no sense. So then I had to concoct my drink at the table, which seemed like more of a hassle for them and me…
