The Geese and Fountain is a traditional welcoming village pub in the lovely Leicestershire village of Croxton Kerrial, five miles west of Grantham and the A1, and nine miles east of Melton Mowbray.
The pub has a real fire, and a quiet and welcoming atmosphere. There is no juke box or fruit machine, but occasional live music and an eclectic playlist of background music supplement the hum of conversation. Dogs, children, cyclists and walkers are all very welcome.
An ever-changing array of locally-produced real ales, craft beers, lagers and ciders have seen the Geese and Fountain included in the 2017 CAMRA Good Beer Guide, after being open less than a year, and every subsequent edition too. The pub was awarded the Vale of Belvoir CAMRA Branch 'Leicestershire Pub of the Year' title for 2017, and went one better in 2018, winning their overall ‘Pub Of The Year’ title, which was retained in 2019. There’s a stunning wine list containing organic and natural wines from all over the world, a ‘gin menu’ featuring 94 spectacular gins, and over 100 different beers in bottles and cans available from the cellar.
The pub serves breakfast, lunch, bar snacks and dinner seven days a week (including a fixed price Sunday lunch offering a choice of locally reared meats or vegetarian roasts with all the usual accompaniments and more for £16 for two courses or £20 for three). The home-made ice cream is just fantastic. Italian-style pizza is a house special, and the vast majority of the produce is farmed in the surrounding Vale of Belvoir.
There are seven en suite letting rooms for Bed & Breakfast, each with its own individual style. Perfectly situated for visitors to Melton, Grantham, Rutland Water, the Vale of Belvoir, Leicester or Nottingham, or travellers heading up or down the A1, the pub is an ideal destination for cyclists, walkers and bird-watchers, as well as foodies, gin enthusiasts and real ale fanatics.

Frequently Asked Questions- Can I book a table just to drink, not eat?
- Yes! Just select the 'bar' service option when you are making your reservation, and the system will allocate you a suitable table, and we will know you are just coming for drinks. We'd very much appreciate bookings for drinking at the moment, as it helps us plan and manage our capacity.
- Are you taking part in the Government's Eat Out To Help Out scheme?
- Yes! Any table booked on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during August 2020 will receive a 50% discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks up to a maximum discount of £10 per person (children included). The total discount received will show on your bill. We will then claim the discount back from the government. It's very simple and does not require you to fill in any forms.
- Have things changed at the Geese & Fountain since Covid-19? Is it still a good place to eat & drink?
- We think it is still a wonderful place to eat and drink. Please book your table in advance if you can. Come to the front door when you arrive, and we’ll explain the new arrangements. There is a one-way system inside the pub, and no service at the bar. Tables are all 2 metres apart, and all drinks and food will be served at your table. What an amazing pub ❤️ All of the meals freshly cooked from
locally sourced food. Great choice of drinks especially the gin and a fantastic choice of well kept real ale. But what sets this pub apart is the Team, amazing hosts Nick and Kate and everyone else we met were friendly and nothing was too much for them. Would definitely recommend!

We were having the family meal we planned back in March. They enabled us to be socially distanced. We had a marvellously filling Sunday lunch, with all the trimmings. We all had roast meat, which was all locally sourced and well cooked. We managed to squeeze in a dessert as well, and we're not disappointed. Thank you to all the staff for looking after us so well.

We had a lovely meal and evening and the geese and fountain. The food was top quality and lots of it! Lots of it was homemade which was very much appreciated and we loved the little touches of homemade bread before the meal. The staff were lovely and service was great. One criticism was that the service was a little slow and we felt staff could have been out to check incase we needed anything a little more often but we do appreciate all the extra measures which have to be put into place due to COVID which can cause things to be a little slower than usual. Value for money was so good, we benefitted from the welcome back meal and the eat out to help out discount so weren’t expecting great quality food but we were very happily surprised to be served delicious, perfectly cooked home made food! Would absolutely recommend and hope to return soon, keep up the good work! Thanks!

The food was excellent and arrived quickly. Really ten out of ten considering this is also a ‘village’ pub. Even the children’s portions were all freshly cooked. Only down point was we sat outside by ourselves in a courtyard off the car park for social distancing reasons and as we have noisy kids. Not the pubs fault but we miss the ambience of a noisy pub in the afternoon.

Starters were all very lovely, mains went down well, the lasagne had too much seasoning (oregano maybe?) which was over powering and gave it a musty taste. The top was also very thick and stodgy. Salad delicious as usual and fries great. For desert we asked if the rice pudding was just plain, simple rice pudding and was told it was so ordered two. It was actually drenched in maple syrup. One of the girls did offer to take it back (it was okay, one of the others ate it instead) but we would expect such a key element of a dish to be mentioned on the menu or for the FOH staff to know about it. In all a decent meal which everyone enjoyed, bad luck the bill payer chose both the lasagne and the rice pudding! :-D

Lovely, quiet, peaceful atmosphere in bet garden. Food was amazing and value incredible with two combined offers. It took a while for food to be served due to a bottleneck in the kitchen but the garden provided enough entertainment for the hungry kids. Will definitely be going back

Had to wait over half an hour for desserts, and and another 25 minutes for the bill when we asked for it. However, the politeness and courtesy from staff were very good, and we did receive apologies. The inside area is quite tired and could do with a bit of a facelift. Though we do appreciate the difficulties at this time. The food could not be faulted.
