Costa Brava

$25 - $50

Costa Brava Tapas Bar and Restaurant is a must for anyone wanting an authentic tapas experience. The quaint indoor/outdoor space feels far removed from Pacific Beach, with tile floors, arched doorways, and simple décor that evokes the Spanish countryside. The tapas menu is extensive, and peppered with delicacies such as Jamón Serrano, necessities such as Tortilla Española, and a seemingly endless array of specialties including dates wrapped in bacon, stuffed piquillo peppers, and savory croquettes. The entrees are equally tantalizing—the Paella has been voted the best in the city, and the steaks and seafood are bursting with tempting flavors. Alongside tapas, wine should flow freely, and Costa Brava’s extensive wine list is well-suited to the task: it offers a well-chosen array of Spanish wines, complete with pre-dinner cava, post dinner sherry, and Costa Brava’s ever-popular sangria.

Excellent food, delicious Sangria, Great Ambiance.

My husband and I came to Costa Brava for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the unassuming yet charming Spanish rustic decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. Having been to Spain, we were pleasantly surprised by the tasty Sangria served in a large pitcher, as well as by the mouth-watering appetizers that melted in our mouths. Our main course was a shared Paella, which is their signature dish. Without a doubt, it is not only a culinary delight, but it is absolutely authentic, rich in flavor, and the portions are extremely generous. We had left-overs, which were just as good, if not better the next day! The chef, who is a first-class Spanish chef, is key to the delicious and authentic food being prepared, and he is a friendly and warm chef. We will definitely go back and let our friends know about this little piece of Spain tucked in Pacific Beach. Ole!

A Pleasant Surprise

My wife and I went to the restaurant for lunch. Street noise was muted. The decor is simple, but tasteful and clean. Our waiter was friendly and patient. The bread, soup, salad, and Sea Bass were well prepared, hot, and a pleasure to eat. The place settings were clean and neat, too. The cloth napkin was crisp. Everything was in order, well prepsred, and at a fair price. Next time, we'll be at Costa brava for dinner over the weekend, where guitar and/or flamenco are performed, our waiter told us.

Will Not Visit Again

On this Friday night I just could not wait to write this review. In the past, my "crew" of attorneys - (I know you probably won't feel sorry for us) and I would visit this restaurant bi-monthly and spend about $300.00 each visit - which is difficult to do at this restaurant. On this day, as our group was growing, we were told by the staff we could not bring chairs or tables over to our area until all our people showed up which they did within 15 minutes of our arrival. When the last of our people showed up the still EMPTY tables we originally tried to grab now had reserved signs on them and when I inquired about getting more chairs and tables the staff could not assist our request even though these tables and chairs still sat empty. I asked to talk with the manager (I was later told he was the owner) who has long black hair like a Harley rider, mustache and smells like stale cigarettes. I told him that we were not allowed to expand our group when our people were not present but when they arrived the still EMPTY tables were not available to us now because there was a reserved sign on them. (These reserved tables and chairs continued to sit EMPTY for 30 minutes after my request while the rest of our group stood around waiting for other people to leave.) The owners response to me was, "When you have your own restaurant you can run it your way." His place was busy (but not full) when we left so I guess he does not really care about my business but his immature, unprofessional attitude insured a dozen less patrons or about $600.00/month from his gross receipts. The wait staff taking care of our group tried to be as accommodating as possible given the short comings of the person that signed their checks. We are going to try a new Tapas place on Turquoise in PB for future Friday night happy hours that I am now told by one of my crew trumps Costa Brava. I hope he is right
