Root Food + Wine is a rustic yet elegant, boutique restaurant in the heart of Missouri Wine Country, just up from the Katy Trail, in downtown historic Augusta, Missouri. It offers a locally sourced pre-fix dining experience, either inside the nostalgic 1905 vintage home or outside herb gardens, located on the grounds of Oaks Crossing.

Root Food + Wine is the fruition of a journey started by Chef Philip Day, 20 years ago. Chef Day's philosophy is to offer warm and gracious service, along with the highest quality of local sustainable produce for his cuisine.

The menu changes frequently with seasonality at the forefront. Our menu offers a 5 course tasting menu that allows different choices for each course. I could have notified the chef that we were vegetarian, but felt it was not needed since the online menu listed a vegetarian "garden" option. But when we arrived we learned the online menu was not updated to show the garden option was deleted. "We update the menu monthly" was the only response (we attended April 23). I would hope the restaurant would up date the menu as soon as it changes.

The unique flavors at Root were amazing. Everything dish was so thoughtful. I can’t say enough to praise this chef! My only suggestion: Because this is a 2 hour experience, the chairs need to be more comfortable. A small wooden seat is fine for a 30 minute burger, but this experience needed something more plush. Overall, our experience was SUPER positive. We loved Root!

Well worth the effort (a 280 mile bike ride in our case!) to get to Augusta MO for the extraordinary experience of dinner at Root. The food was unique, the flavors were exquisite, and the cocktails were superb. To top it all off, the service the best we’ve ever experienced. The food was a real treat. The various combinations of foods that people are not very likely to encounter anywhere else, were excellent. I had, for example, a cabbage wedge prepared with choke berries in a most delicious sauce. Neither in Germany nor in the U.S. have I ever eaten such an unusual but extremely delicious cabbage creation.

Loved everything!!! Even my husband who is a meat and potatoes NOT gourmet food eater really enjoyed it all! The only thing I would say about ambience would be cloth table cloths in outdoor herb garden would really take it up a notch! Also, we were first to be seated outside and did asked music to be turned down since we couldn’t converse. Immediately they did but just thinking some softer genre would really add to the beauty of the setting and amazing food! Thank you❤️

Not our first time a won’t be our last to enjoy this fabulous gem of a restaurant. Whether it’s the food or drink, everything chef and resident mixologist prepares is wonderful. Despite being a meat and potatoes kind of guy, at the urging of my foodie wife I went rogue this time and ordered things I didn’t even think I’d liked but was treated to several surprises that I can now add to my menu due to the wonderful preparation. Highly recommend this establishment for a great evening out, then stay at one of the nearby b&b’s.

Great food and service in a charming old farmhouse and patio. A beautiful drive through the hills and farmland around Augusta to get there. All in all, a wonderful night out.

All the 10's speak for themselves. We're not fond of overly fancy restaurants, but who isn't fond of good food. Root has a wonderfully casual atmosphere, and equally wonderful food. Great, friendly service too.
