Situated in the heart of old Colinton village close to the Colinton Dell,
it’s a haven for the local community, walkers and passers-by. With freshly prepared food, we cater to a wide variety of tastes,
offering an array of choices, from bar snacks to three-course restaurant meals.The bar has a selection of real ales, handcrafted cocktails, a collection of malt whiskies and an assortment of wines sold by the glass and bottle. My daughter and I are regular attenders. We initially followed Gillian who was the manager and who previously worked at the Hermitage. Although she has now moved on we remain loyal. James and his staff do a wonderful job of making us, and all the others, welcome. Food is always fresh and good with the menu undergoing change from time to time and also regular specials. I would say pricewise it is moderate but it is undoubtedly good value!

Excellent service. I had booked a wheelchair space as part of a party of 9 and the staff had the ramp out ready and waiting for my arrival. The table was conveniently located close to the accessible bathroom. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with my request to also access the garden. Would definitely book again.

The whole experience was very good. Our table was ready and after a slight hiccup re getting the menu the food order was taken and then the drinks order. Both the food and drinks arrived in reasonable time with little gap between courses. The quality of the food was excellent as was the service. Overall a very satisfactory Christmas lunch. I’m sure we will come again next year both after our walks and for our Christmas meal.

My daughter and I are regular visitors to The Spylaw having followed Gillian from The Hermitage. The Spylaw is exceptionally well run. Service is always quick even when extremely busy. On a mid-week visit we had a booth which was lovely which was the first of three. When 2 more customers arrived they were shown to booth two next to ours when they could have been shown to booth three leaving a gap between us. They were quite loud speakers so being further away would have made conversing between ourselves easier. Being mid-week there was a good chance that maybe only two booths would be taken. Although eventually the third booth was taken it was some time later and by two older and quieter speakers. It is a small thing which maybe shows a sense of thinking out the box. Overall you deserved 10’s for everything and the waitress was great, the food lovely and no long waits to be served. Well done.

I met a woman friend for lunch at the Spylaw on 19 December. The staff were wonderful and friendly; I am handicapped, so they moved us to a more convenient table, and later called me a taxi. My guest ate a steak and ale pie, which she though was befond compare, but very big and filling, so we did not have desserts. I had a Burger, which was pretty good too. I regretted that Bailey's Irish Cream was not available as a digestif; we both had coffees instead.

We enjoyed our evening, meeting up with friends whom we had not seen for a long time. Well kept Timothy Taylor's Landlord (the Guinness looked good too!) 3 steaks and one fish for mains. Both were excellent. I can only comment on the steak which was first-rate and very tasty. That is not always the case when one eats out. Really good service and excellent value for money. We were invited to taste a new autumnal cocktail at the bar as we left. Clever! One senses a hard-working team of staff and this is an important facility for Colinton. Well done!

Visited with friends on a lovely day so had a drink in the beer garden before eating indoors. Great service, lovely cocktails and food. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to come back!

The choice of food was excellent and it came well presented. The pub is attractive especially if you sit in the back part overlooking the garden. The lady who served us was very nice and friendly and as we were walking we were able to enjoy the wine list.

As always the food and service at the Spylaw was excellent. On a Tuesday lunchtime in February you don't always expect a nice buzz but there were quite a few diners in and everyone seemed to be having a good time and like us were a returning customer - always a good sign. A very limited menu now but that shows everything is prepared freshly and there are daily specials and things to suit every taste. I like the small plates with a side if the excellent parmesan fries.
